Unique and Easy Date Ideas for Every Month

My husband and I try to go on a date at least once a month. It’s so hard with kids to find time for just the two of you, but you owe it your marriage to make the time. Date night is the only night where we aren’t distracted by household responsibilities or interrupted by our daughter. We actually have time to laugh and talk and focus on just the two of us.

Trying a new restaurant is one of our favorite date nights, but going out for dinner and hiring a babysitter can get expensive. Sometimes I don’t even want to plan the date because it’s just another thing added to my mental load…can you relate? Don’t worry, I got you covered. Check out these unique and easy date ideas that won’t break the bank and will keep the romance alive all year long.

September

Visit a Farmers Market nearby. These have become more and more popular and many markets sell more than just produce. You can usually grab something yummy for breakfast or lunch and buy products from local businesses. Look for fresh produce or meats and plan a meal to cook for dinner. Once the kids are down for the night, you can have a 2nd date enjoying your farmers market meal.

Something about this time of year makes me want to be outside with a warm coffee in hand. Find a local coffee shop and walk around town. Or take your coffee to go and walk at a park. There’s an older couple in my neighborhood who take a leisurely stroll around the neighborhood every morning with their coffees. They are always smiling and chatting, enjoying each other’s company. Want to skip the babysitter? Put on a movie for the kids, and take your coffee out to the front porch. It’s okay to hide away for a little.

November

Around November and December is when a lot of organizations will begin to collect money and donations for the holidays. It’s also a time where money may be tight with all the spending you’re doing for your own family. There are other ways to give back that don’t cost a thing and what better way to do it than with the person you love. Find an organization you’re both passionate about and volunteer your time while spending quality time together. Volunteer Match is one website that helps connect you to local volunteer opportunities.

December

The holidays can be a really stressful time for families or it can be the most wonderful time of year. With so much going on this month, it’s important to set aside time for the two of you, but keep it easy. Most towns (even small ones) decorate for the holidays. Pick a town to stroll around and enjoy the lights, trees, and Christmas-themed decorations.

Choose an indoor activity you’ve never experienced before. If you’re near a big city, check out a live show. Too expensive? You’d be surprised how many museums are free to the public. Other ideas include an aquarium, skating rink, bowling alley, casino and arcade.

Ever since me and my husband have been together, we’ve never gone out to dinner for Valentine’s Day. Restaurants take advantage of this day to offer over-priced pre-fixe menus. Instead, we treat ourselves to a nice bottle of wine, order take out and sit on the couch. We still make it a date though. One of our traditions is coming up with a list of questions for each other to get to know each other better. The list has become harder every year, but more fun to answer. Another favorite thing we do on date night is play gin rummy. We have been keeping score for 5 years now.

For my birthday a few years ago, my husband created a food tour for me and all my friends in NYC. It was by far my favorite birthday celebration. Some cities offer food tours, but you really don’t need to pay the price. Pick a city and create your own unique foodie date. With a little research, it’s easy to find restaurants all in one area that you’ll both enjoy. I realize this one can get expensive, but you don’t have to buy a meal at every place. Split one thing at each place, and don’t forget to leave room for dessert!

April

The weather is starting to turn this month, and when it’s sunny all I want to do is be outside. Go on a hike or bike ride. Many parks offer different trails, so you can take a more leisurely walk or challenge yourselves on a more daring path. It’s important in a relationship to disconnect from our phones and the busy world for a little. What better way to do that than to connect with nature and with each other.

May

Find a nearby town that you’ve never explored before or visit the main street in your own town and pretend you’re a tourist. Walk around and check out the shops and attractions. Take pictures, share a sweet treat, or gift your spouse something from one of the shops.

June

Visit a vineyard, brewery, or cider mill this time of year! Many of these places offer live music or fun events, and you can usually bring your own food.

July

Go to the beach or a lake for the day. Pack a picnic and some games. There’s something about sunshine and water that makes make me feel like I’m on vacation. Stay long enough to enjoy the sunset together.

August

It’s the end of summer and you both deserve one last hoorah. Grab tickets to a concert or find a local venue that offers live music. Dance and sing like nobody’s watching. Stay out past curfew and be kids again!
